Groundbreaking
director Rivette transfers the Victorian-era classic to rural
France in the 1930’s. Catherine (Fabienne Babe) is the
daughter of a dissolute landowner whose beauty gets her farther
than her name. Her Heathcliff, named Roc (Lucas Belvaux),
works on the farm and they’ve been inseparable since
childhood. But her early passion for him starts to wane as
she becomes more concerned with wealth and prestige than love.
When she accepts the proposal of Olivier (Olivier Torres),
the son of a powerful local family, Roc disappears. His reappearance
as a man of prosperity sets the rest of the tragic plot in
motion.
